Position Description:

PTW is hiring a Senior Construction Estimator, Major Projects to join our team in Calgary! The Senior Construction Estimator will be responsible for all the estimating functions related to developing and submitting proposals for PTW Major Projects. This role will work closely with the Business Unit Operations Team on developing multi-disciplined estimates for Major Projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and prepare varying ‘Class’ estimates on conceptual and design-build, multi-disciplined projects for various North American market segments.
  • Utilize parametric and analogous estimating techniques for JV and large project budgetary estimates.
  • Review specifications and drawings to determine the total scope of work.
  • Ensure complete material take-offs are performed.
  • Request/participate in peer reviews (Safety, Quality, HR, SCM, Equipment) for input on indirect staffing and associated costs.
  • Initiate and participate in risk reviews, provide recommendations for contingency.
  • Apply appropriate risk factors to estimates, i.e. time of year, working at heights, location, etc.
  • Liaise with Construction Manager to understand the execution strategy and develop the work breakdown.
  • Develop pricing strategy for any required sub-contractor performed scopes. Contact necessary sub-trades and suppliers for estimates; supply necessary required drawings and data and evaluate submissions.
  • Work with suppliers, manufacturers and engineers through the estimating process to obtain competitive material and equipment pricing.
  • Recommend best solutions based on costs, quality, availability and risk.
  • Interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings to determine material and other associated costs to be included in the final estimate price.
  • Document the Estimate and Schedule Basis
  • Prepare final estimate summaries analyzing each section for scope, pricing and completeness.
  • Lead the estimate close-out procedure.
  • Prepare the Gate 2 – Approval to Submit, presentation package.  Lead the Gate 2 Readiness Assessment.
  • Support and prepare cost estimates associated with significant scope and execution plan changes.
  • Ensure proper handover to the PM team and all supporting functions.
  • Support Project Controls in the budget development.
  • Implement postmortems on all bids to embrace an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Support the set-up and maintenance of the estimating database. 
  • Develop standard estimating methodologies and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Work with, lead, and mentor less experienced Estimators in other PTW Companies as directed. 
  • Acts in a manner consistent with, and according to, PTW’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethical Behaviour.
  • Complies with standards and procedures of the PTW Health & Safety Manual and Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 15 years of Estimating experience in various market segments and disciplines.
  • Successful background in winning $15M - $100m projects.
  • Previous experience working on projects in Canada and the U.S.
  • Must have prior experience and be comfortable working with different currencies.
  • Proficient in electronic estimating and database software.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints and divisional project specifications.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the North American Codes of Practice.
  • Demonstrated leadership, work ethic and quality of work.
  • Exceptional organizational skills required with the ability to properly coordinate large volume activities and meet deadlines.
  • Must be highly self-motivated with the ability to work within a team and independently as required.
  • Exceptional customer service skills to build effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and superb interpersonal skills.
  • Works well under pressure and has a sense of urgency to thrive in a deadline-oriented environment.
